Maintenance Tips

General Instructions

There are so many types of carpets available in the market made of silk, wool, polyester, cotton etc. The cleaning and maintenance of a carpet varies as per the fabric and material it's made of. There are some basics to clean and maintain a carpet and give it a fresh a new look but we recommend that you should consult with the seller of carpet for the cleaning and maintenance. For all the users of carpets and rugs, here we are giving some general instructions

After Your New Carpet is fitted

New carpet should always be vacuumed to remove loose fibres that work their way to the surface. If a piece of the carpet fibre stands above the surface, simply snip it off to the level of the other tufts. Do not pull it out.
There may be a slight odour from the carpet, the underlay or the adhesives after fitting. Open windows and doors to ventilate the room and the smell will normally disappear within a few days.

Regular Vacuuming

This will help to avoid a build up of dirt in your carpet. A vacuum cleaner without a beater bar is best for loop pile carpets.

Moving Furniture

If possible, move heavy furniture periodically to help to avoid indentations. The uses of floor protectors such as castor cups will also help. When moving heavy wheeled furniture prevents damage by using a protective barrier like heavy cardboard or hardboard.

Deep Cleaning

Professional carpet cleaners can either spot clean specific stains or clean an entire carpet. You can rent equipment to do this yourself, but make sure no residue is left when you have finished, otherwise the carpet will quickly become dirty again.

Stain Removal

For specific guidelines on removing spots and stains, see more guidelines below

More Guidelines

Spilt something on your carpet? Don't panic. You should use the following items for cleaning spills on your carpet. Many other household cleaners contain chemicals that could cause permanent damage.
• White cloths or white paper towels. • Detergent Solution- use no more than 1/4 teaspoon of non-bleach liquid dish washing detergent to 500ml of water. Do not use cloudy or creamy detergents. • White Vinegar Solution- mix 1 part white vinegar to 1 part water. • Ammonia Solution- to neutralize odours mix one tablespoon of household ammonia to one 100ml of water. (Do not use on wool or wool-blend carpets). • Non-Oily Nail Polish Remover or Acetone chewing gum remover (freeze or solid type). • Dry Cleaning Solvent- Use a proprietary dry cleaning solvent. Turpentine or Mentholated Spirits can be used as an alternative. • Spot Remover- Use spot removers designed specifically for grease, oil, or tar, such as Dirt Devil.

Scrape: First remove as much of the solid spills as possible by scraping the carpet gently with a round cornered spatula or spoon

Blot: Blot repeatedly with a dry, white, absorbent cloth or plain white paper towel. Work from the outer edge toward the centre of the spot to avoid spreading the spill.

Do not scrub: Do not scrub the area! Scrubbing can cause pile fuzz or distort the carpet.

Now remove: Use the spot & stain removal chart overleaf in conjunction with these general guidelines:

STEP 1: Pre-test any spot removal agent in an inconspicuous area to make certain it will not damage the fibre or the dye. After applying, hold a white cloth on the wet area for 10 seconds. Examine the carpet and cloth for colour transfer, change or damage.

APPLY a small amount of the selected cleaning solution to a white cloth; allow soaking in for about 10 minutes then working in gently. Keep using the cleaning solution as long as you can see a transfer of the spill to the cloth. Be patient! Complete removal of the spill may require repeating the same step several times.

RINSE the affected area thoroughly with cold clean water and a sponge, and blot with a dry cloth until all of the solution has been removed. Continue to use a dry cloth or paper towels until the area is completely dry.

STEP 2: Finally, blot by placing layers of white paper towels over the affected area, and weigh down with a flat, heavy object. Leave until perfectly dry, preferably overnight.
